Where Did This Start?
A Quora question often asked is: How did the Hospitality industry probably give birth to tourism?
“The roots of the Hospitality industry’s influence on tourism probably began with the Sumerian inhabitants of Mesopotamia.”
They inhabited the southern region of Mesopotamia around 3500-1900 BC, as one of the world’s earliest advanced civilizations.
The Sumerians were pioneers in various fields such as agriculture, writing, mathematics, and architecture. They built impressive ziggurats (massive structures), complex irrigation systems, and city-states. Not too shabby!
They cultivated the grains used to produce alcoholic beverages, then, they built taverns and served these libations to people, focusing on travelers.
Just like great hospitality today, they fostered a warm reception and care for those who happened by! This resulted in travelers being drawn to Mesopotamia on their journeys.
These taverns became some of the earliest examples of hospitality-driven tourism destinations. And they were some of the very first tourist traps!
Without such pioneering hospitality, the potential of tourism would remain untapped, like an undiscovered gem.
Great Hospitality does 2 things: it enhances the lives of travelers – giving them food and lodging. It allows them to be a tourist!
It enhances the lives of the people who provide it – giving them an income and a better life.
The Sumerians are renowned for their contributions to human history, which continue to impact tourism today. Now people visit Mesopotamia to study ancient civilizations.
Hospitality Revolutionized Traveling For Fun, Forever!
Enter 1970! Yes, I wouldn’t have missed it!
Tourism has changed dramatically over the past fifty-five years.
The spotlight has shifted far right toward the world of the Hospitality Industry.
Now the haves-not-so-much can fly and sail or drive to destinations of their choice.
MASS Tourism, is now available for the masses!
This is not just about accommodation and dining. You want more… a memorable experience. One that goes beyond what you expect when eating in a fine restaurant back home.
You always remember the friendly concierge who shared insider tips with you.
There’s the master chef who tantalizes you with local delicacies and knows your name.
The diligent housekeeping staff transformed your room into a cozy haven!
The art of Hospitality has taken center stage; your journeys are truly exceptional.
You are no longer a traveler – you are an adventurer!
It Was A Phenomenon!
Flying was a new and unexpected expense in our lives and mostly it was considered extravagant… There, I said it! I got over that hurdle in a hurry!
Flying grew exponentially. It became massive in a very short time.
Seventy years ago, we were starting to see brochures showing white sandy beaches, and reed huts fitted with modern amenities – not found in our homes – overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
The whole scene was exotic, out of our reach, and we wanted more of it!
Hospitality’s job lies in the art of creating experiences that ignite your spirit of exploration.
You want something to talk about! You packed suitcases to do this!
Yes, promise me zip lines and para-sailing. I like luaus and dancing until midnight.
I want to play volleyball on the beach and ride a horse.
Travel And Tourism Comes To Center Stage
The Disney-like Tourism Industry had an idea: “Let’s show people what it is really like in the Caribbean. Let’s make our brochures attractive and inviting“.
“Let’s have exclusive tours and use the USD for trade. Let’s keep it inexpensive and simple”… Now we have package deals! Heh…heh!
Guess what? The world of Hospitality and Tourism grew exponentially, and so did the airline industry, hotels and food industry, and cruise ships...
Surprise!.. Everyone had jobs and was happy to be involved in the Hospitality Industry.
As tourists visit, they spend money on accommodations, dining, transportation, and attractions; great for local businesses.
Juan lives here, and for the first time in his life, he can afford to own a car, and the economy is improved for everyone.
The country has invested in its infrastructure for visitors to get around. Now the locals have new roads.
The income from tourists has paid huge taxes into the economy. Now Juan’s children attend better schools!
They have more hospitals, libraries, and community centers.
Their universities are offering scholarships!
There is a sense of cultural exchange between the citizens and the visitors. This is life-altering. They can never be the same!
Good Hospitality leads to visitor satisfaction and repeat visits.
Remember: they want you back.
Here Are Some Numbers:
In the Maldives, 28% of their GDP is Tourism and it accounts for 15% of employment! The British Virgin Islands, Seychelles, Aruba, and most of the Caribbean Islands follow the same pattern.
The Maldives is probably the most expensive because of its location and high-end accommodation. It has an upper-middle-class economy.
BTW: The Maldives is made up of 1,192 islands, of which 187 are inhabited. It is so flat, that the highest point, recorded on one of those islands, is 17 feet!
The average altitude on the inhabited islands is about 1.5 meters above sea level.
This would take some getting used to!
Remember when Cuba opened for Tourism again?
The reviews said: “The Hospitality needs work”. Things were slow for a while.
Most of their enthusiasm to receive guests was fueled by the Cuban people who desperately wanted visitors from the outside. They merged their lust for Tourism with good Hospitality. (Read about 5-star accommodation in Cuba).
The first three years were the hardest, but they learned about Hospitality and how that would entice foreigners to their country. Now, Cuba stands proudly among any other five-star accommodations!
They had the goods, and tourists just needed to know what they were, how they could enjoy them, and what it would cost. The Hospitality Industry planted the seeds... heh… heh … that this will be your next vacation destination!
Visitors are willing to pay the price for a wonderful tropical vacation. They will make the absolute most of their trip because they will be back home in 14 days to face the snowy winter… It’s February in Montreal!
Downsides of Development and Balancing Preservation:
Is this all OK? Do we want to give up huge tracts of land for airports and adjoining roads?
Do we want noise and pollution at this end of the island?
Well, offhand I would say yes. The land is being used to build an airport and the roads and the businesses that go with it.
Unfortunately, there is always a downside to development, and the ratio of farmland cannot be compromised. It is carefully monitored. The local heritage needs to be respected and kept intact.
On the other hand… this airport has grown the economy… don’t forget the concessions, hotels, restaurants, and island tours that followed.
Isolated Island dwellers can travel to anywhere in the world now; their lives are enriched.
Tourism encouraged a multitude of new business opportunities and economic benefits.
The Role of Airports in Tourism and Hospitality:
The Minute You Get That Ticket In Your Hand…
Overall, the airport staff’s professionalism, assistance, and amenities on offer set the tone for an exciting and memorable Travel Adventure!
I always remember those fun airports. The layover was never long enough to shop, eat, and visit the lounge. These are the nuts and bolts of a great trip.
The airport is a study of logistical genius. We had no clue what happened to our luggage when we checked in… We just couldn’t wait to get those bags out of our hands.
Except that they went to the right airplane so that your bags arrived at your destination.
In all the years I have traveled, my suitcase was lost only once. It was personally delivered two hours later… Great Hospitality service!
Another time my luggage was destroyed beyond repair by handlers! I believe that it was run over by a Boeing on the tarmac… several times. The bags were replaced!
In MY Experience…
When I was a teen, our town had a dilemma.
Our airport was small. People made fun of how the planes were walked in toward the building.
They didn’t use those paddle-thingies. They crooked their index finger in that come here gesture to move the planes forward.
Okay, so at least the structure was there. The city began to prosper after our airport expanded and became an international destination.
Thanks to the Travel and Tourism Industry, now those beautiful brochures show the great Hospitality of Windsor Ontario, situated south of the Detroit River at Detroit.
A great location for people wanting to fly to a less expensive airport and visit Canada!
The traveler has a cheaper ticket all around, and we have more revenue. You can drive from the Windsor Airport and be standing on Jefferson Ave. in Detroit within 20 minutes.
Now Windsorites can go anywhere… We have an International Airport!
I can tell you more about the Windsor/Detroit border cities; click here!
How Will YOU Benefit From Hospitality?
This could happen to you…
Word-of-mouth recommendations spread like wildfire, creating a wave that attracts more visitors. It helps to make plans, when you talk to the person who has been there!
The promise of a memorable experience is why you choose a destination.
The best Hospitality for my dollar WINS!
When you land you will be taken to your hotel by taxi. It is about two miles and costs $20.00 plus a tip. (I only have a ten-dollar bill!!)… plus a $10.00 tip.
It must have cost a lot to build this hotel. Picture it: There were architects, builders, masons, electricians, plumbers, finishers, landscapers, and designers…
How much cement did it take to build this 10-story hotel? Think about it.
And don’t forget the industry which supplies all the bedding and towels to said hotel. And food… Everything comes here by ship… this is an island!
The DOMINO EFFECT is staggering and this is what gives us a thriving economy.
How Does The Hospitality Industry Grow Prosperity Now?
The concierge is a great guy and gets things done. He has sent my bags to my room.
I can de-stress; my clothes will be unpacked and hung.
They steam out the wrinkles; nice!
I feel good now and the sea-side deck is filling up. There is lots of chatter, moody music,
and a dance floor. There’s a light breeze coming off the ocean.
I was welcomed with a warm smile – they called me by my name!
Behind the Scenes of Hotel Operations:
And The Timing Is Perfect
Have you ever wondered how everyone gets fed, at the same time, in such a huge hotel?
Watching them skirt around each other in the kitchen and walkways is like watching the Keystone Cops in action!
There are hundreds of people working in the serveries, ready to cater to every dietary preference. The chef’s culinary talent is put to the ultimate test.
The main dining room feels so pleasant and inviting.
No detail is ever ignored: they pay close attention to presentation, table settings, and excellent service.
Everyone at your table for eight will be served at the same time and you will all eat together.
Dinner will be hot, attractive, and delicious! – – I know, hey?
By the way, this hotel will probably serve up to 1500 meals tonight…
A sojourn here will be a memorable experience, with lasting impressions.
This is a venue that will be enjoyed again and again.
A word of caution… Stay away from those swinging doors! Be careful!..
If you go through the wrong one… you could die!
How Does This Happen?
In your mind, roam the halls and see how the rooms are changed and dressed at least once a day… The fairies are at work!
Room Service prepared about 600 breakfasts this morning and almost everyone wanted theirs between six and seven-thirty a.m… with HOT coffee.
All of the griddles, ovens, and toasters were busy;
all hands on deck for breakfast.
Everyone has a job to do.
As the front desk would say, “We Want You Back”
Everyone is an ambassador.
Go to bed early!
Who Benefits From Great Hospitality And Tourism?
Probably the whole town around the hotel and beyond!
And... now they have an airport!
The spinoff from the Hospitality industry serves thousands of people whether they work with the public or not.
The mom-and-pop hotels nearby are happy to accept the overflow.
This pays for their teens’ college tuition!
55 Years Of Memories!
The first thing that jumps out at me is how the Hospitality Industry has shaped our lives for the last 55 years.
Families are more spread around the world and they don’t mind the distance.
They can always fly home for a visit.
As our world gets smaller, we see unusual delicacies in grocery stores – melons from Thailand. We need a particular console table and it comes from Sweden – Ikea? I love butterscotch toffee – from England?
Today, cars, clothes, food, and oil are imported and offset with our exports.
Education, hospitality, and tourism are considered an export.
As long as there are airports, ships, trains, buses, or dog sleds, people will always travel and go somewhere to experience something new. Once the Hospitality Industry got into the act, there was no turning back… Ca-ching!
be a tourist destination! Your adventure begins now!
